Survivor Episode 1 Recap

The 16 cast members arrived at the base of a Maya pyramid and were greeted by Jeff Probst. Jeff informed them there were two new surprises that Bobby Jon Drinkard and Stephenie Lagrossa from Survivor Palau would be part of the game, both of whom were welcomed into their respective tribes.

Jeff then informed them the first challenge was a reward challenge. To win they would have to complete an 11 mile journey through the jungle. The winner would receive the better camp and flint for starting fires. He then told them were to get their maps and take as much food and water as they were comfortable carrying.

Nakum got off to an early lead on the trek. While trekking through the jungle Blake was hit in the shoulder with a spiky tree limb. The injury proved more serious than first thought, and Margaret who is a nurse practicioner removed the embeded thorns. Throughout the rest of the day Blake was suffering from dehydration and was vomiting heavily. Meanwhile over a Yaxha Gary assumed a leadership role, when asked what he did he said he was a landscaper and his name was Gary Hawkins (a lie to cover up his pro football past). Eventually darkness fell and both teams slept in the jungle.

Both teams awoke at dawn to continue the trek. When they reached an open patch of trail Yaxha was able to briefly catch up with Nakum but eventually fell behind due to slower tribe members. Nakum reached the boat at the rivers edge first and won the challenge by a distance of half the lake. They won the better campground and the flint. Yaxha was then sent with a map to find their campground.

At Nakum Blake continued to sick, as did Judd, Jim, and Bobby Jon. Bobby Jon was the most seriously ill almost losing consciousness several times, again Margaret helped him recover.

The immunity challenge consisted of a canoe race around a water pylon where you grabbed a torch, you then rowed the boat back to the beach and using ropes pulled the boat back to the pylon to and use the torch t light the fire. When they were loading the boats in the water Jim ripped a bicep muscle. While still remaining close Nakum was unable to catch up and Yaxha won immunity.

While the women of Nakum talked about an all woman alliance Jim was now wearing a sling which sealed his fate and he was voted out at tribal council.
