Survivor Guatemala Episode II Recap
Friday, September 23, 2005
The episode begins with Nakum returning from tribal council. They are exhausted physically and emotionally. At the Yaxha tribe it's a different story things are bright and happy and the group is starting to bond. When talking about themselves Gary again lies about his NFL past.
The reward challenge consists of climbing across a rope obstacle course to retrieve 8 bags. The winner receives hooks, bait, twine and other items to help them catch fish. The competition was close but on the last leg Blake manages to beat Brian and wins the reward for his tribe.
The next day at Yaxha some members of the tribe are starting to notice Morgan really isn't doing as much work as some of the other members. Being short on food Gary and Rafe find an ant nest and bring it back to camp to eat for protein, which grosses Stephenie out completely. Meanwhile back at Nakum Blake continues to be sick a fact which annoys Judd and Brandon.
The immunity challenge starts out with a group tug of war, which ends in a draw. The next part is an individual tug of war the first of which is Gary against Judd. At this point Danni says 'Gary is a quarterback Judd you're like a linebacker'. While this was within earshot of everyone the only one who seems to pick up on it is Brian. Judd wins despite a desperate wresting attempt by Gary. The next event features Jamie against Brandon where Brandon wins. The last leg has Judd against Jamie again. Jamie gets the initial start, but Judd makes a strong move at the end and manages to secure immunity for his team.
At Yaxha the talks turns to who will be voted off. Initially Stephenie is on the block but proves her strengths. It comes down to Morgan and Lydia. While they are discussing this Brian asks Gary if he was ever an NFL quarterback which he openly denies. Lydia makes a last effort to save herself.

THE NAKUM TRIBE BECOMES INCREASINGLY CONCERNED WITH BLAKE'S POOR HEALTH
THE NAKUM TRIBE BECOMES INCREASINGLY CONCERNED WITH BLAKE'S POOR HEALTH, ON "SURVIVOR: GUATEMALA -- THE MAYA EMPIRE," THURSDAY, SEPT. 22
"Man Down" -- As some of the Nakum men continue to struggle, the castaways are particularly concerned about Blake, on SURVIVOR: GUATEMALA -- THE MAYA EMPIRE, Thursday, Sept. 22 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
When Blake's breathing becomes erratic, the tribe voices their concern. Meantime, desperate for protein, Yaxha serves up ants for dinner, which does not sit well with Stephenie. Lacking any sympathy for ailing tribe members, one Nakum castaway complains about the weak ones being lazy and getting pampered. The heat and rigors of the Guatemalan jungle have deteriorated many of the castaways who must muster the strength for a reward and an immunity challenge. Leading into Tribal Council, one castaway fights back when their work ethic is questioned.
And, the second member is voted out of the tribe.

Survivor Episode 1 Recap
The 16 cast members arrived at the base of a Maya pyramid and were greeted by Jeff Probst. Jeff informed them there were two new surprises that Bobby Jon Drinkard and Stephenie Lagrossa from Survivor Palau would be part of the game, both of whom were welcomed into their respective tribes.
Jeff then informed them the first challenge was a reward challenge. To win they would have to complete an 11 mile journey through the jungle. The winner would receive the better camp and flint for starting fires. He then told them were to get their maps and take as much food and water as they were comfortable carrying.
Nakum got off to an early lead on the trek. While trekking through the jungle Blake was hit in the shoulder with a spiky tree limb. The injury proved more serious than first thought, and Margaret who is a nurse practicioner removed the embeded thorns. Throughout the rest of the day Blake was suffering from dehydration and was vomiting heavily. Meanwhile over a Yaxha Gary assumed a leadership role, when asked what he did he said he was a landscaper and his name was Gary Hawkins (a lie to cover up his pro football past). Eventually darkness fell and both teams slept in the jungle.
Both teams awoke at dawn to continue the trek. When they reached an open patch of trail Yaxha was able to briefly catch up with Nakum but eventually fell behind due to slower tribe members. Nakum reached the boat at the rivers edge first and won the challenge by a distance of half the lake. They won the better campground and the flint. Yaxha was then sent with a map to find their campground.
At Nakum Blake continued to sick, as did Judd, Jim, and Bobby Jon. Bobby Jon was the most seriously ill almost losing consciousness several times, again Margaret helped him recover.
The immunity challenge consisted of a canoe race around a water pylon where you grabbed a torch, you then rowed the boat back to the beach and using ropes pulled the boat back to the pylon to and use the torch t light the fire. When they were loading the boats in the water Jim ripped a bicep muscle. While still remaining close Nakum was unable to catch up and Yaxha won immunity.
While the women of Nakum talked about an all woman alliance Jim was now wearing a sling which sealed his fate and he was voted out at tribal council.

TV Guide Report
Tuesday, September 06, 2005
Survivor: Guatemala kicks off with the most brutal challenge yet--and a major twist that will knock your buff off!
Deep in the heart of the Central American rain forest, the cast of Survivor: Guatemala is getting a rude wake-up call--and we're not talking about the shrieking howler monkeys. It's Day 2 of the game, and the Nakum tribe is hurting. Danni, a rail-thin pageant queen turned sports radio personality from Kansas, is nursing some serious scraps and bruises on both legs, the result of a nasty spill down a hill, while Blake, a commercial real-estate broker from Texas, is fretting over how to remove several thorns lodged in his left shoulder. Meanwhile, the requisite "oldest Survivor," retired Colorado fire captain Jim (a spritely 63), looks deathly pale as he hunches next to a majestic Mayan ruin, puking his guts out.
Welcome back to TV's most enduring reality show, no in its 11th edition. It may go down as the most grueling season yet. Crocodiles lurk in the waters; mosquitoes cloud the air; the thermometer can rise to a steamy 114; and the challenges are so intense they'd make Palau winner Tom Westman cry for his mommy.
The tone is set early in the first episode with a brutal challenge: The two tribes, Nakum and Yaxha, are pitted against each other in an 11-mile overnight hike through the poisonous snake-filled jungle. (The winning team gets the better of the two camps and the flint to help create fire.) Even Survivor challenge producer John Kirhoffer, who helped cook up the torturous trek, underestimated the toll it would take. "The hike turned out to be excruciating," he says. "You can test these things [beforehand], but you never really know how hard they're gonna be on somebody who isn't used to it. We have a lot of really fit people, and it just kicked their asses."
But perhaps Guatemala's toughest task will be living up to last season. Survivor: Palau was a critical darling and fan favorite. Host and producer Jeff Probst is well aware of the pressure. "Palau is maybe one of our top three seasons," he says. "[The location] was gorgeous. We had a great finish and a good winner. Then you come to Guatemala, where it's brown, rainy, and muddy, and you think 'God, I hope this isn't ugly. I hope the season isn't ugly and the people aren't ugly."
Probst isn't talking about the Survivors' faces here: Overall, they're a fairly photogenic bunch. Among the personalities who pop right away is Morgan, a bubbly magician's assistant; Cindy, a zookeeper; Lydia, a fishmonger who stands all of 4 feet 10 inches; and Amy, a fourth-generation cop who sums up her reason for being here thusly: "I'm a fuckin' lunatic."
A Survivor first, Guatemala boasts a celebrity: former NFL quarterback Gary Hogeboom, who spent six years with the Dallas Cowboys in the '80s. Hogeboom, however, plans to keep that information under his buff. "It's been years [since playing in the NFL], and this is a pretty young crowd," he says. "If someone thinks they recognize me, I'm just gonna play it off: 'Nope, it's not me.'"
Survivor: Guatemala will incorporate more of its country's culture than in previous seasons. With consent from the Guatemalan government, the Survivors will live among the 2,000-year-old ruins, and some of the challenges are Mayan-inspired, such as a ball game that Kirhoffer describes as "the great, great, great, great grandfather of basketball." It is believed that the ancient Mayans traditionally sacrificed a losing member to the gods, something Danni had read up on prior to her trip. "I just hope we don't get beheaded," she jokes. "Watch, instead of writing our names down [at tribal council], that'll be the new twist."
