Jim was born in Nebraska and was the youngest of eight children. He served in the marines after graduating high school and was part of Cuban missile blockade. He returned home and married his high school sweetheart.

Jim and his wife moved to Colorado where he sold real estate. He later became a fireman. He completed his college education and continued to rise through the ranks of the fire department until he became captain. He retired after 30 years of service in 2002.

He and his wife love to travel and he has visited the Himalayas, Nepal and Peru. Currently he is working on constructing a helicopter and enjoys playing golf.
